The role of ginger in the economy and its export orientation for higher income is well recognized in Nepal. Historically, the ginger market in Nepal had been operating without any concerted effort of either government or a private sector organization. However, in 2005, Nepal Ginger Producers and Traders Association (NGPTA) was formed and registered under NGO act of 2034.
It was felt that there is a need and scope to present the opportunities and challenges of the ginger sector at the national level, either through a network or alliance/organization. Nevertheless, as the capacity and resources of the NGPTA were limited, it had difficulties associated to strengthening and widening the Association. In order to raise issues related to their ginger business and trade up to the national level it was realized that the NGPTA needs to be well organized, operationally efficient and sustainable, and have a strong unified vision of its mission and activities at national level.
